The Politics of Roads?
You be the judge….

This Monster Index was generated by Donna Passmore of the Farmland Defense League when she emailed this data to various enviros. She outlined that when groups began campaigning against Premier Gordon Campbell and Cabinet Minister Kevin Falcon's “horrific” Gateway Plan six years ago, that she and others quickly realized that the movement of goods and people was really a secondary issue that was overshadowed by the opportunities Gateway could provide as it poured billions of taxpayer dollars into the hands of corporations who in turn “generously filled BC Liberal's campaign coffers”.

She soon discovered that a 2008 donation by the New Car Dealers Association of BC of $100,000 affirmed suspicions.

“In addition to the organizations that benefit from the actual construction, some research I was doing this afternoon demonstrates that long after construction is complete, the expanded highways provide the BC Liberals with opportunities to support generous highway maintenance contracts to their friends and donors,” said Passmore.

Passmore supported her claims by accompanying her message with the following attachment which indicates that the value of these contracts is based on the amount of laneway to be maintained.  http://www.th.gov.bc.ca/bchighways/contracts/maintenance/total_lane_km.htm.

“Significantly increasing the amount of lane means more money for friends of the BC Liberals.”
